First thing first- Do this now
before doing anything else!
Go to the start button and click the run button.
In that box type in "cmd" and click okay. Win 98 users
type in "command".
A new black box will appear, type "ipconfig" and hit enter.
The information displayed is your Ip address, if it BEGINS
with anything other than a:
10.x.x.x
169.254.x.x
172.16.x.x
192.168.x.x
Where the x's can be any number up to 254.
If your Ip address does not begin with one of those numbers,
give us a call IMMEDIATELY! 632-7272.
Lastly, type "exit" to get out of the black box.
Are you Securely Wireless?
Wireless is great to have, but so many do it wrong.
Have you ever though that the data on your computer is more
valuable than your computer? Did you know that by having an
unsecured wireless access point, that anyone can access your
network; TO INCLUDE ANY AND ALL COMPUTERS ON THAT NETWORK? Iv
found that 85% or better are wide open to having someone steal
your Internet. No big deal, it's just Internet. It becomes very
real when your ISP bills you and extra $400 for going over your
limit by 20 gigs. What else could someone do, ANYTHING,
the front door is bolted shut, but the side and back doors are
wide open. They could first and for most, steal your Identity,
create my own spam server using your computer, run an illegal
site and point everything back to you, and on and on... They get
the money and the girl, you get the time. This maybe
extreme, chances are slim that you could be attacked, but why
leave that window open.
Emails-
Never, Never, Never reply to an email asking for
your information! Ebay, PayPal, your Bank will Never do anything
ever like that. The email is fake, it maybe a picture that
looks legit or a redirection. In the end, you will fill it out
and never know anything was wrong. If you are curious
about an email, call your bank, go to their website and you will
see the scam warnings. One last note unrelated, when you
get that call from Ali Baba about your Visa card, ask him for a
call back number and watch how fast that call ends.
Secure Pages-
I do all my shopping online, it saves on gas and
time, heck most of the time shipping is even free. We do our
banking, fill out forms online and its only going to get more
and more like that. If your at your banks site or shopping
online and ready to check out, look to make sure the site begins
with an HTTPS://. The S is what we are looking for.
If you have an S, then you should have a little yellow lock box
on the lower right of your screen. Those are indicators that
your connection is secure. You can double click the lock to see
if the information and purchase is going to the right folks.
Keyboard Shortcuts-
(Ctrl + Z) Equals undo, great for fixing
little errors like typos.
(Ctrl + Y) Equals redo, rarely used, but helpful if you to
do many undos.
(Alt + Tab) Allows you to flip between opened windows.
(Alt + F4) Used to close programs. Tell online games there
is a secret something by hitting alt + f4. Hee hee.
What does that mean-
Kids in the chat
rooms online? Ever wonder what it means?
lol - laugh out
loud
brb - be right back
rolf - roll on for laughing
1040 - means you owe me big time (tax form?... get it?)
